Systems Engineering

Systems engineers hold the whole mission in their head – requirements, architecture, interfaces, verification. We place the people who make sure every subsystem actually adds up to a spacecraft.

01

What Systems Engineering engineers actually do.

Systems engineers translate mission objectives into technical requirements, manage the interfaces between GNC, avionics, structures, thermal, power and software, and verify the integrated system meets its requirements before flight.

On complex programmes this increasingly means Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) – formal, tool-based system models rather than static documents – which is reshaping what “senior systems engineer” actually requires.

02

Why this hire is hard.

  • Requires breadth across every subsystem plus real depth in at least one
  • Strong requirements-management and verification & validation (V&V) experience is rare
  • Must communicate across disciplines and hold the full system architecture in their head
  • Senior systems engineers are usually promoted internally, rarely surfacing on the open market
  • MBSE/tooling experience (DOORS, Cameo, SysML) is a specific, scarce skill
03

Roles, technologies and seniority we cover

Roles we cover

Systems Engineer, Requirements Engineer, Systems Architect, V&V Engineer, Interface Control Engineer, Chief Engineer, Systems Engineering Lead/Manager.

Technologies & competencies

Requirements management tools (DOORS, Jama), Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE, SysML, Cameo), interface control documents (ICDs), verification & validation planning, risk management, trade studies, systems modelling.

Seniority levels

Graduate Systems Engineer through Senior, Principal, Chief Engineer and Head of Systems Engineering.

04

Typical candidate profiles

Aerospace, mechanical or general engineering backgrounds; often broad generalists who’ve worked across multiple subsystems; frequently promoted from a specific subsystem discipline (GNC, avionics, propulsion) into a systems role; MBSE-trained engineers increasingly sought for complex programmes.

05

Relevant industries

Satellite primes, launch vehicle manufacturers, defence & space primes, new-space constellations, national space agencies and their supply chains.
