Space Robotics
Space robotics engineers build the manipulators and mechanisms that service, assemble and explore in orbit and beyond. We place specialists from a genuinely small global field.
What Robotics engineers actually do.
Space robotics engineers design and operate the manipulators, mechanisms and robotic systems used for in-orbit servicing, assembly, sample return and planetary exploration – combining mechanical design with the control and autonomy needed to operate remotely or independently.
Unlike terrestrial robotics, there is no room for iteration once a system is in orbit – every mechanism has to work reliably in vacuum, radiation and extreme thermal cycling, often after years of dormancy.
Why this hire is hard.
- A genuinely small global field — far fewer flown robotic systems and programmes than terrestrial robotics to have trained on
- Requires mechanical, control and often autonomy expertise together
- Many of the strongest candidates are embedded in a handful of research institutions or primes
- Space-qualified mechanisms and materials expertise takes years to build
- Rarely surface on the open market — most moves happen through direct relationships
