Mission Operations
Mission operations engineers keep spacecraft running once they’re in orbit – real-time judgement, not design-phase engineering. We place operators who are calm when telemetry says something’s wrong.
What Mission Operations engineers actually do.
Mission operations engineers plan, command and monitor spacecraft once they’re in orbit – writing operational procedures, monitoring telemetry, diagnosing anomalies in real time, and making the calls that keep a mission running day to day.
It’s a fundamentally different skill from design-phase engineering: real-time decision-making under genuine operational pressure, often on a shift rota, where the cost of hesitation or error is immediate rather than theoretical.
Why this hire is hard.
- Requires calm, decisive judgement under real-time pressure — genuinely different from design-phase roles
- Deep familiarity with a specific spacecraft or mission’s systems takes months to build
- Experienced ops engineers are highly retained by the programmes that trained them
- Shift-based, on-call work isn’t for everyone, narrowing the willing pool further
- Anomaly diagnosis under pressure is a skill that’s demonstrated, not just described on a CV

Technologies & competencies
Telemetry & command systems, mission planning software, anomaly diagnosis & fault trees, procedure writing & operational readiness, ground station coordination, shift-based real-time operations.
Seniority levels
Graduate/Early Career through Senior Operations Engineer, Mission Operations Lead and Mission Operations Manager.
Typical candidate profiles
Aerospace, physics or engineering backgrounds; often trained in-house on a specific mission or constellation; military/defence operations backgrounds transfer well for the real-time decision-making culture.
