Avionics
Avionics engineers build the electronic nervous system of a spacecraft – power, sensing, communications. We place the people who design electronics that survive radiation, vacuum and thermal extremes.
What Avionics engineers actually do.
Avionics engineers design, build and integrate the electronic systems that power, sense and communicate for a spacecraft – power distribution, communications, sensors, and the electronic architecture tying every subsystem together electrically.
Qualifying components and designs for flight is a specialist, time-consuming discipline in its own right – an avionics engineer who has taken a design from schematic through environmental qualification to flight is a different candidate from one who has only done terrestrial electronics.
Why this hire is hard.
- Requires deep hardware design expertise combined with understanding of the space environment — radiation, thermal extremes, vacuum
- Flight qualification of components and designs is a specialist discipline few engineers have done end to end
- Supply-chain and export-control constraints narrow an already small pool further
- EMC/EMI design for spaceflight is a genuinely different discipline from terrestrial electronics
- Senior avionics engineers with real flight heritage are heavily retained by the programmes that trained them
